On the first weekend of March, the Iditarod Dog Sled Race mushes through Rainy Pass Lodge. This legendary event, known as “The Last Great Race” is a contest of endurance and triumph over the hostile winter wilderness—it commemorates the brave mushers who took life saving serum to Nome, Alaska during the Diphtheria epidemic of 1925. You can’t compare the Iditarod to any other competitive event in the world! It is a 1049mile race over the roughest, most beautiful terrain ‘Mother Nature’ can serve up. Mushers and their dog teams face jagged mountain ranges, frozen rivers, dense forests, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast. The Iditarod depends on thousands of volunteers all along the way and you can be a part of this incredible journey! Rainy Pass Lodge is an official checkpoint on the Iditarod trail. As a guest of the Lodge, you may participate in the race as a volunteer or simply enjoy watching the teams come into the check point and cheering them on as they leave. No matter what your level of participation is; being part of this amazing adventure is the chance of a lifetime. Book your reservations today as availability for this event is very limited.
Your Iditarod Package starts with a nice hotel room overlooking the ceremonial start of the race in downtown Anchorage. The next day you will fly to Rainy Pass Lodge and land on our frozen lake in a small bush plane equipped with skies. While at the lodge you may join in or watch all the excitement of the dog sleds and mushers as they come into to our check point after 140 miles on the trail. There is a lot going on and we really add to it with a variety of activities like wine and beer tasting, live music from Alaskan musician Ken Peltier, rides in a 1924 Model-T Snow Mobile, a special presentation from the race judge, fireworks Sunday evening, and a lot more. You can even be added to the wake-up list for the ‘Northern Lights’ viewing. After the mushers come through the lodge you will have a few more days to enjoy a wide variety of activities from snow machining along the Iditarod trail to look for left behind dog booties, take pictures of surreal scenery, search for shed moose and caribou antlers, go ptarmigan hunting, do an overnight at a remote log cabin, or enjoy snow shoeing, cross country skiing, ice fishing, sledding and more. A fun winter wonderland excursion that you’ll always remember.
